MS Dhoni could retire after IPL 2025 or play until 2029, says former CSK teammate

Dhoni has played the most matches (264) in the history of the IPL and is one of four players who have featured in each season of the tournament.

Since MS Dhoni announced his international retirement in 2019, people have been wondering for long if he will play in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The wicketkeeper already let go of the Chennai Super Kings’ (CSK) captaincy permanently after the 2023 season, and his fitness isn’t getting better.

MS Dhoni’s fitness struggles

Dhoni has had knee troubles and has even undergone surgery on his left knee in 2023. Such has been his fitness that in the last two seasons of the IPL, he has played a grand total of 130 balls.

While the former CSK captain hasn’t hinted at anything, speculations regarding his retirement have been going around. Will Dhoni continue after the IPL 2025 season? His former India and CSK teammate Robin Uthappa reckons that no one can read Dhoni’s mind.

MSD might play until IPL 2029

The wicketkeeper retired from Test cricket midway through the 2014-15 Border-Gavaskar Trophy. He played his last ODI in the 2019 World Cup (June 9) but didn’t announce that he was calling time on his international career until August 15, 2020.

Dhoni has his own way. No one knows what to expect from him. At 43, he’s still going. Uthappa won’t be shocked if Dhoni tells the world that he’s calling it quits after the IPL 2025 season. But it wouldn’t surprise him if he goes on to play until the IPL 2029 season.

“And if you’ve got those skills and if you’ve got the passion to keep going. I don’t think anything should stop you. I won’t be surprised if he retires at the end of the season. But I won’t be surprised if he even goes on to play for another four seasons after this,” Uthappa said on JioHotstar.
