The Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association (MPCA) has thrown its weight behind coach Chandrakant Pandit, brushing aside recent criticism from some players and extending his contract for two more seasons. Pandit is also the coach of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in Indian Premier League.
This display of confidence comes despite public disapproval of Pandit’s methods by notable names like Punjab Kings batter Ashutosh Sharma, Namibian all-rounder David Wiese and former MP and current Pondicherry pacer Gaurav Yadav.
Chandrakant Pandit winning record earns him support
Chandrakant Pandit, who also helms the IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders, took charge of Madhya Pradesh in 2020. Since then, his tenure has coincided with the state’s most successful period in domestic cricket.
Under his guidance, Madhya Pradesh clinched their maiden Ranji Trophy title in 2022, followed by consecutive semi-final appearances in the prestigious tournament.
Criticism and Counterpoint of Chandrakant Pandit
However, Chandrakant Pandit’s strict coaching methods have come under fire recently. Players like Punjab Kings batsman Ashutosh Sharma and Namibian all-rounder David Wiese have labeled his approach as “authoritarian.” Gaurav Yadav, a former Madhya Pradesh player now representing Pondicherry, echoed these sentiments.
However, this criticism hasn’t swayed the MPCA. They point to Chandrakant Pandit’s successful track record, including not only the Ranji Trophy win but also reaching the finals of the Under-16 tournament and the semi-finals of the Under-23 tournament. Additionally, Madhya Pradesh witnessed 10 out of their 12 teams reaching the knock-out stages last season.

MPCA Defends Chandrakant Pandit approach
MPCA secretary Sanjeeva Rao addressed Ashutosh Sharma’s comments directly. He acknowledged Sharma’s early promise at the Under-16 level but stated that the player couldn’t capitalize on the opportunities provided. Rao further explained that Sharma’s carefree batting style, unconcerned with losing his wicket, wasn’t suited for the longer format of four-day cricket.
In conclusion, the MPCA has chosen to stand by Chandrakant Pandit, valuing his winning strategies over the critiques of certain players. Time will tell if Pandit can continue his success story with Madhya Pradesh in the coming seasons.
