Michael Vaughan backs his countryman- Michael Vaughan who led England to the 2005 Ashes wrote on the Telegraph, “Joe Root is England’s best ever – now Sachin Tendulkar should watch out.

“For me Joe Root stands alongside Graham Gooch as England’s greatest batsmen and the way he is going he could surpass Sachin Tendulkar’s record for the most Test runs.

“He (Root) is still 6000 short of Sachin’s total but he is only 31 and if James Anderson can play until he is 40 then I think Joe can too. He loves batting that much.

“He is driven. He is a cricket badger. You have to have it in you to wake up every morning and think about batting,” Vaughan concluded.

Joe Root in numbers-

  • The former England captain playing in his 118th Test match amassed an unbeaten 115 runs in the second innings of the first Test as the hosts won by five wickets.
  • Root’s performance was the icing on the cake as he marked the occasion with his 26th Test hundred.
  • The comparisons with Sachin Tendulkar could not be neglected as he has age on his side.
  • Vaughan also underlined Root’s importance to the team as he was England’s best player in the Ashes, despite them losing horribly 0-4.

Second Englishman to score 10000 Test runs-

  • Joe Root added the feather in the cap by becoming the second English player after Alaister Alastair Cook to score 10000 Test runs.
  • While Cook has in excess of 12000 runs, it will be a matter of time for Root to get past him as he has the required firepower and age to get past him
  • Cook represented England on 161 occasions in the red-ball format, while Root played his 118th Test.
  • The honourable list of players also contains some of the greats of the game like Brian Lara, Ricky Ponting and others.

Mark Taylor predicts Root will surpass Tendulkar-

Earlier former Aussie great Mark Taylor predicted that Joe root has the best shot to surpass Sachin Tendulkar with age and form as a big factor, “Root has a minimum of five years left in him, so I think Tendulkar’s record is very achievable.

“Root is batting as I have ever seen him bat over the last 18 months to two years. He is in the prime of his career, so there are 15,000 runs-plus for him if he stays healthy,” Taylor had told Sky Sports.

It now remains to be seen on how Root approaches his career graph with Sachin’s record firmly under his radar.
