Tucking Taskin Ahmed for a single off his hip Kohli edged past Jayawardena’s 1016 in 23 innings, eight innings quicker than the Sri Lankan, at an average of over 85 and a strike rate of 131.

It came with KL Rahul at the other end, who vitally found form with a score of 50 from just 32 deliveries.

Virat Kohli is enjoying a great run of form with the bat. The 33-year-old has struck 156 runs in three matches of the ongoing T20 World Cup at a strike rate of over 144.

This year, Kohli has played 17 T20Is and has piled up 641 runs at an average of 53.41, including an unbeaten hundred against Afghanistan. In India’s T20 World Cup 2022 opener, the right-hander hammered 82 runs against Pakistan and stayed unbeaten to hand India a memorable win in the last-ball thriller.

With 3856 runs in 111 matches, the 33-year-old is also the T20Is’ leading run-scorer. Rohit Sharma, the current captain of India, is second with 3794 runs in 144 games. In both T20 International matches and T20 World Cups (12), Kohli has scored the most 50s (36).

South Africa and India have not faced off since their semifinal match in the 2014 T20 World Cup. However, the two countries have frequently played bilateral series. This year, South Africa have made two trips to India for a bilateral T20I series. Team India triumphed 2-1 in the second series whereas the first series ended in a 2-2 draw.
