Morne Morkel confirmed as Team India’s bowling coach? LSG not looking to renew ex-pacer’s contract

While Sairaj Bahutule will act as India's interim bowling coach for the series against SL, Morne Morkel is 'almost' confirmed to join thereafter.

Abhishek Nayar, Ryan ten Doeschate and now Morne Morkel? The newly made Gautam Gambhir is about to get all his wishes granted from BCCI. With the former Indian opener taking charge, he has come with his preference and need a free hand as far as selecting his coaching staff is concerned. While the designation of Nayar and ten Doeschate was confirmed at Gambhir’s first press conference, questioned remained on the role of India’s (permanent) bowling coach.

Bye bye LSG, Hello Team India for Morkel?

Gautam Gambhir is admiration for Morne Morkel is a mystery to none. From his captaincy days at KKR, where Gambhir signed the South African and was a main weapon among pacers. From then, Gambhir worked with Morkel at LSG, where the Protea served as a bowling coach under the mentorship of Gambhir.

And now, Insidesport has learnt that Morkel’s contract at the Lucknow franchise is about to end and the franchise, nor the player is likely to extend his services in the IPL. Instead, this is the clear indication that the 39-year old will join Team India as bowling coach after the Sri Lanka series.

Bahutule – India’s interim bowling coach before Morkel

Morkel is currently in South Africa to see his unwell father. In the meantime, BCCI named Sairaj Bahutule as India’s interim bowling coach for the white-ball series against Sri Lanka. Bahutule is also a key member at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) and will serve Gautam Gambhir for the 3 T20Is and as many ODIs.
