Mohammad Nabi brings out his inner MS Dhoni, asks reporter “Do you want me to retire?”

Mohammad Nabi's recent antics during the Lankan Premier League (LPL) recalled a nostalgic resemblance to MS Dhoni's funny post-match presentation conference at the T20 World Cup 2016.

Afghanistan legend Mohammad Nabi channeled his inner MS Dhoni during a recent press conference at the Lanka Premier League (LPL). Turning 40 next year, Nabi has been one of the stalwarts of Afghanistan cricket for almost 15 years now. From being an associate nation to now competing at the highest level, Nabi has seen it all with his national team.

However, when a reporter inquired about his retirement plans, Nabi playfully countered with, “Do you want me to retire?” The 39-year-old all-rounder is currently leading the Dambulla Sixers at LPL and is clearly determined to represent Afghanistan for at least two more years.

MS Dhoni resemblance in Nabi’s statement!

Nabi’s question to the reporter mirrored a similar incident with Dhoni back in 2016 during the T20 World Cup held in India. An Australian journalist inquired about Dhoni’s retirement plans, and in typical Dhoni fashion, the legendary cricketer invited the reporter to the podium for a humorous exchange. Dhoni playfully asked the reporter, “You want me to retire?” “Do you think I am unfit, looking at me running,” MSD asked. “You think I can survive the 2019 World Cup?” The journalist shyly answers all of his questions.

Nabi eyeing T20 World Cup 2026

Nabi’s playful response at the press conference highlights his utmost dedication to the sport. He believes his body is in good shape, citing his fielding, running, and bowling performances as evidence. Nabi intends to maintain his fitness for as long as possible and contribute to Afghan cricket.

While acknowledging that the Champions Trophy 2025 in Pakistan might be his final appearance in the 50-over format, Nabi has his sights set on a different prize: playing in the upcoming T20 World Cup co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka in 2026.

Hopefully, if I get selected, I will definitely play,” Nabi said about the next T20 World Cup. Nabi’s determination to compete at the highest level reflects his passion for the game and his belief that he can still be a valuable asset to the Afghan national team.
