Mitchell Starc earns Purple Cap with maiden IPL 5-wicket haul, pays back every penny of Rs 11.75 crore

This is Starc's maiden 5-wicket haul in T20 cricket and just the second for any Delhi Capitals player.

Mitchell Starc was on fire in Vizag! The left-arm pacer, who was the most expensive buy of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 auction, was bought for Rs 11.75 crore by the Delhi Capitals (DC). Given his performance last year, many still thought that Starc was overpaid.

Well, the pacer has proved those people wrong. After playing 2 matches in the IPL 2025 season, Starc has earned himself the Purple Cap with 8 wickets. He’s taking a wicket in less than 6 balls. Against the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), he was at his absolute best, taking his maiden 5-wicket haul, not just in the IPL but also in T20 cricket.

Starc also becomes the second player from DC to take a 5-fer. In the inaugural season of the IPL, Amit Mishra bagged five wickets against the Deccan Chargers. After 17 years, another DC player has reached the milestone.

And the Australia quick didn’t take useless wickets. Starc virtually finished the match in the powerplay itself with the scalps of Travis Head, Nitish Kumar Reddy, and Ishan Kishan. But he didn’t stop there. He returned in the 19th over and cleaned up the tail with the wickets of Harshal Patel and Wiaan Mulder.

“We know what a powerful side the Sunrisers (Hyderabad) are. We knew powerplay wickets were key. All around, it was a fantastic performance in the first innings of this game. It’s nice to be in a new franchise. Our second game – it’s been great to settle in with the guys and get to know a few people. I am 35, and I am not young, but I hope there’s still a little life left. (On dismissing Head six times in T20s) I think that’s why he doesn’t face the first ball anymore. I haven’t played too much T20 cricket. I am an older one, a chance to talk to the younger ones. I still enjoy my cricket; that’s why I am still playing,” said after his maiden 5-wicket haul.
