Just days before the deadline for team to sublit their retention lists before the IPL 2025 auction, Mitchell Santner decided become a headache for Chennai Super Kings. The New Zealand all-rounder has been with CSK as early as 2018 before making a return in 2022. Santner single-handedly dismantled the Indian batting order in IND vs NZ 2nd Test by striking 13 times, steering the visitors to a historic win against India.
Santner adds to CSK’s headache over IPL retention
Apart from the sure shot retention of MS Dhoni as an uncapped player, CSK have quite some players who they would like to retain. Ruturaj Gaikwad, Matheesha Pathirana, Devon Conay, Ravindra Jadeja are no brainers. That leaves the team with one spot open for a retention. The contenders in fray are Santner, his teammate Daryll Mitchell, Shivam Dube and others. Santner proved his worth in Pune by helping New Zealand end India’s winning streak at home. He is also set to lead New Zealand in their upcoming white-ball series against Sri Lanka.
Latest news
So far, CSK have not used Santner for a full season in any editions of the IPL, with 6 being the maximum number of games he’s played in one season. 70 runs with the bat and 15 wickets is all he has to his name. However, he is a budding talent who is getting better with time and seems to be reaching his peak soon.
Santner is no stranger to T20Is, having played over 100 matches since making his debut in 2015. He has been regular part of New Zealand’s XI for white-ball formats.
