Missed a trick by not using Joe Root: Anil Kumble rebukes England for not using Root against India

IND vs ENG Test: Anil Kumble claimed that England missed a trick by not using Joe Root as a spinner on Day 1

India dominated play on Day 1 of IND vs ENG 1st Test in Hyderabad. While the Indian spinners wreaked havoc, the same can’t be said about the English spinners. Anil Kumble after stumps went on to claim that England missed the trick by not using Joe Root as the 4th spinner.

Indian spinners scalped 8 wickets while England managed just a solitary wicket via Rohit Sharma’s dismissal. Anil Kumble also pointed out that the confidence of the English spinners were vital in their poor show with the ball.

“English spinners were not consistent with the length. The Indian spinners bowled a good length and it turned,” said Anil Kumble after stumps.

“England missed a trick by not using Joe Root. Next thing is the confidence. Hartley is on his debut, Rehan is playing his second Test match. Jack Leach is back in the team after a while,” Kumble added.

Both Kumble and Kevin Pietersen then went on to dissect as to how the Indian spinners where better than their counterparts. Joe Root who has fifer against India in Tests wasn’t used. Instead Ben Stokes relied on debutant Tom Hartley who was smacked all across the ground. Hartley gave away 63 runs from 9 overs.

“You saw Ashwin troubling the lefthanded batters, Root would have created a similar impact,” concluded Kumble.
