Michael Vaughan’s son gets his first professional contract, follows in the footsteps of cricket royalty

Archie Vaughan's signing is part of a growing trend of children of former England players making their mark in domestic cricket.

Archie Vaughan, the promising son of former England cricket captain Michael Vaughan, has taken a significant step in his budding cricket career by signing his first professional contract with Somerset. This milestone deal, slated to commence on November 1, marks the commencement of a journey that encompasses both the 2025 and 2026 seasons.

Archie Vaughan – A prodigy since childhood

At a mere 18 years old, Archie already exhibits a formidable skill set, boasting proficiency as a top-order batsman and an off-spin bowler. His cricketing journey began within the esteemed academy set-up at Taunton back in 2020. Hailing from Millfield School, where he has honed his craft since the age of 15, Archie has the spirit of a budding player.

He made his debut for Somerset’s second team in 2022 and has also played club cricket for Taunton St Andrews. Recently, he was part of the main squad’s pre-season tour of the UAE, where he scored 35 off 28 balls in a three-wicket win against Yorkshire in the third-place play-off of the Abu Dhabi T20 Counties Super Cup.

It’s something that I’ve worked extremely hard for: Jr. Vaughan

In a recent interview with Somerset’s club website, Archie expressed his gratitude for the opportunity bestowed upon him, articulating, “It’s something that I’ve worked extremely hard for and it’s something that I’ve strived for since I was a kid, so to get the opportunity for a club where I’ve really enjoyed myself over the last few years is an honour,” Archie told Somerset’s club website.” His words reflect a blend of humility and determination, indicative of a young athlete poised to make his mark in the cricketing realm.

His father, Michael Vaughan, a stalwart of English cricket, captained the national team during a storied period, including the historic Ashes victory in 2005.

Archie’s signing is part of a growing trend of children of former England players making their mark in domestic cricket. Andrew Flintoff’s children, Rocky and Corey, are part of the Lancashire set-up. Josh de Caires, son of former England captain Michael Atherton, is a first-team player for Middlesex and was part of an England Lions training camp last winter. Haydon Mustard, son of Phil Mustard, made his first-class debut for Durham this season and represented England at the recent U19 World Cup.
