“Pick him, but on one condition”: Clarke’s bold take on Rohit Sharma’s inclusion for England tour

Rohit Sharma's place in India's Test squad remains uncertain despite leading India to Champions Trophy glory, with form and age concerns.

Despite challenging form in the ongoing IPL 2025, Rohit Sharma is likely to head to England for the upcoming Test series. Initially, his position in the team seemed uncertain after India’s loss in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia. However, leading India to a Champions Trophy win rejuvenated his chance again to captain India. As the five-Test series approaches, Rohit is favoured to captain the team. India will be aiming for its first series win in England in 18 years.

Former Australia captain Michael Clarke has expressed his support for Rohit Sharma remaining in the squad as the captain. However, Clarke suggests a change in Rohit’s batting order, given his struggles as a Test opener in Australia, where he managed just 31 runs from three Tests.

Michael Clarke’s on including Rohit Sharma

Clarke proposes that Rohit should bat in the middle order at No. 5, where he can effectively handle the second new ball. On the show ‘Backstage with Boria,’ Clarke stated, “I think Rohit still has the game. Class is permanent, and you have seen that in the Champions Trophy final. He would be an ideal No. 5. He can face the second new ball if needed, and if there are early wickets, he can hold things up as well. But Rohit loves to open and can blunt the new ball as well. If I was an Indian selector, I’d pick Rohit for England as the captain and leader.”

Rohit’s 2021 tour: Something to remember

Rohit Sharma’s last tour to England in 2021 was successful, with 368 runs from four Tests, including a century at the Oval and strong performances at Lord’s and Headingley. During that series, Rohit enjoyed his role as a Test opener before being appointed as captain later in his career. In the current scenario, Rohit is struggling with constant fitness concerns and form as well.
