MI flex record as Tilak Verma ends jinx in Kotla nightmare for DC

Tilak Varma ended his jinx as Mumbai Indians continued their record of defending 200+ totals with a win over Delhi Capitals

Delhi Capitals suffered their first defeat of IPL 2025 as Mumbai Indians came back from the dead to clinch a 12-run win at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Sunday. The visitors scored 205 thanks to a fine fifty from Tilak Varma. Karun Nair’s effort went in vain as Karn Sharma ensured MI kept their record of defending 200+ totals in tact with just their second win of the campaign.

Tilak ends jinx, MI extend record

Before Sunday, Tilak Varma had never won an IPL game in which he had scored a half-century. In his seven previous half-centuries, Mumbai Indians never bagged the two points. On Sunday, that once again seemed the case with Karun Nair leading the Delhi Capitals chase. However, Karn Sharma and some late harakiri from the hosts saw the 23-year-old finally break his jinx.

Tilak played a crucial role in helping Mumbai surpass 200, stitching a vital partnership with Naman Dhir in the final overs. Subbed out after a horror show just a couple of games earlier, the left-hander has turned his fortunes around, with runs and luck now both on his side.

The 200+ score meant that the Mumbai Indians were in comfortable territory. The five-time champions have never lost a game in the IPL while defending a score of 200 or more. While many teams have come close over the years, MI have always prevailed, stretching that record to 15 games.

Delhi get hunted at Kotla again

It was Delhi Capitals’ 45th defeat at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. It is the joint most defeats a team has suffered at a venue, equaling 45 by RCB at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. While DC won both their ‘home’ games in Vishakhapatnam, their dreadful home record returned on their first game at home in IPL 2025.

  • Most defeats at a venue in the IPL
  • 45 – RCB at Bengaluru
  • 45 – DC at Delhi*
  • 38 – KKR at Kolkata
  • 34 – MI at Wankhede

Delhi won four in four before playing at the Kotla. With 4 more games left at the venue, the Capitals will need to overturn their home record for them to have a chance at making the IPL 2025 playoffs.
