Meet Will Pucovski, Australian cricketer who suffers concussion for 13th time

With only one Test under his belt, an impressive Will Pucovski's career has been marred by concussion injuries

Australia batter Will Pucovski is no stranger to concussions. The football-turned-cricket player has suffered his 13th concussion, an unwanted record which no player would dream of. And yet, this batter attempts to make a Test comeback, despite suffering so many blows to his head off bouncers.

Will Pucovski and his never-ending concussions problem

With only one Test under his belt, an impressive Pucovski’s career has been marred by concussion injuries. Adding to this, mental health issues that the cricketer has reported so far. With Will Pucovski signing for County side Leicestershire just a day before, his absence in Victoria’s game against South Australia at the Sheffield Shield is bound to impact the batter.

From records that are made public, Pucovski suffered 11 concussion injuries since 2018 to 2022! If that wasn’t enough, the recent delayed concussion symptoms after Victoria second XI’s game adds more salt to the wounds of the injured batter.

The opening batter’s struggle with concussion started long before he started playing first-class cricket. The 25-year-old, who used to be a football player, had suffered injuries to his head playing at his school. It seems like he may have left the sport behind, but his concussion has followed him into cricket.

Will Pucovski’s cricket career in threat?

The batter’s journey into international cricket began with a shoulder injury against India on debut. Two prior concussions in three months prior to that was just the icing to the cake. Back then Will Pucovski had asserted that he would still carry on, no matter what it takes. It still remains to be proven as the star still battles the same demons which haunted him before.

Recounting the most recent incident, the batter suffered a blow during Victoria second XI’s game. Will Pucovski was the victim of a short delivery that crashed into the side of his helmet as he attempted to pull the delivery. The batter went down immediately, with his teammate and the other players rushing to him. Attempting to play on further, Pucovski was forced to retire hurt four balls later, bringing to end his 43-run knock.

He will play County cricket in UK as he attempts to make his way back to the national Test side. Pucovski has played club cricket in England before but will get his first stint in the top flight, joining Leicestershire on a short-term deal that will begin in April. He will play the opening four games of the season, concluding with a match at Lord’s.
