‘Mecca of Cricket’: Houseful Wankhede welcomes Cricket World Cup

England suffered their biggest defeat in ODIs after they got bundled out for 170 in chase of 400.

Cricket fans had slammed the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) at the start of World Cup 2023 as the non-India matches saw thousands of empty seats during the matches. However, a complete opposite visuals were seen during ENG vs SA World Cup match at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Saturday.

The Wankhede Stadium, also called the “Mecca of India Cricket”, saw a full packed crowd for ENG vs SA clash. The fans came in numbers earlier on the day to watch South Africa bat and they were not disappointed. The Proteas side put on a stunning batting performance as they post a mammoth 399 on board.

Notably, this was the first ODI World Cup match at Wankhede Stadium in 12 years. The last time the iconic stadium hosted a game was the historic 2011 World Cup final between India and Sri Lanka which the MS Dhoni-led side won in emphatic fashion.

Heinrich Klaasen was the wreck in cheif as he smashed a 61-ball century to power South Africa to a massive score against a strong England side.

However, while fans were expecting ‘bazball’ chase from England, they were left shocked and disappointed as the side got bundled out for a mere 170 runs in 22 overs. England’s pacer Mark Wood was the top scorer for the side with 43 in 17 balls. For South Africa, Gerald Coetzee was the pick of the bowler with 3 wickets.
