Mayank Agarwal to lead Karnataka squad in Ranji Trophy; Gowtham out

Notably, KL Rahul and pacer Prasidh Krishna are unavailable due to international commitments.

In a strategic move for the upcoming Ranji Trophy, Mayank Agarwal is set to lead the Karnataka squad in the initial two encounters against Punjab and Gujarat. However, the exclusion of seasoned all-rounder K Gowtham has raised eyebrows.

K Gowtham, a prominent figure in Karnataka’s red-ball squad, has been a consistent performer and was the highest wicket-taker for the team in the previous Ranji Trophy edition, sharing the spotlight with pacer V Vyshak, claiming 31 wickets. Despite his impressive track record, the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) men’s selection committee, led by J. Abhiram, emphasized the need to introduce younger talents.

Abhiram stated, “Gowtham has done very well for Karnataka over the years, but all players eventually have to move on. We have to keep the future in mind.”

The spin department will now rely on the relatively inexperienced trio of left-arm spinners Shubhang Hegde and Rohit Kumar, along with off-spinner K. Shashikumar. Among them, Shubhang has the most First-Class experience, with four appearances.

The wicketkeeping role sees Sujay Sateri stepping in for B.R. Sharath, based on his solid performances in the C.K. Nayudu under-23 Trophy.

Sharath Srinivas retains his spot as the other wicketkeeper in the squad. Notably, KL Rahul and pacer Prasidh Krishna are unavailable due to international commitments.

The complete Karnataka squad includes Mayank Agarwal (Captain), R. Samarth, Devdutt Padikkal, Nikin Jose (Vice-captain), Manish Pandey, Shubhang Hegde, Sharath Srinivas, V. Vyshak, V. Koushik, Vidwath Kaverappa, K. Shashikumar, Sujay Sateri, D. Nischal, M. Venkatesh, Kishan Bedare, and Rohit Kumar. The coaching staff comprises Coach P.V. Shashikanth, Bowling Coach Mansur Ali Khan, and Fielding Coach Shabarish Mohan.
