Marnus Labuschagne expressed his views on the potential changes in Australia’s Test batting order ahead of the series against the West Indies. Labuschagne stated that it seems like the “perfect scenario” if Australia opts to open with Steven Smith and have the batting all-rounder Cameron Green at No. 4.
Labuschagne, speaking in Brisbane before a BBL clash, highlighted Smith’s excitement for the new challenge and mentioned Green’s impressive record at No. 4 for Western Australia. He acknowledged that the move could motivate Smith and keep him in top form for an extended period.
If Steve does get the nod [to open], I have no doubt that he will do a good job,” Labuschagne said. “Cameron Green’s record at No. 4 for Western Australia is amazing. It looks like the perfect scenario.
According to Labuschagne, if Smith opens and Green bats at No. 4, it would be an ideal situation. He emphasized that both players are keen on the potential change, and the decision is not a reflection on the current openers but rather an attempt to assemble the best six batters in the Test team.
“Obviously that is not a direct correlation to Test cricket, but you can be pretty confident that over a period of time he is going to be a very good player in that position.” He added.
“[Smith] is excited for a new challenge. If that motivates him and gets the cricket world Steven Smith for another two or three years, I think that is a massive win.”
“When he was captain I know he liked a little more time between being in the field and going out there, but he is ready to get out there from the start now.”
Labuschagne praised Green’s attributes, citing his even temperament, ability to absorb pressure, sound technique, and great defence, making him a versatile choice for the No. 4 position. Labuschagne highlighted Green’s success in different scenarios, including handling short-ball bowling in England and performing well in the IPL.
Overall, Labuschagne believes that if Australia decides on this batting order change, it would be a strategic move to optimize the team’s batting lineup with the best-performing players in the country.
