Australia’s big player Marcus Stoinis has announced his retirement from One-Day International (ODI) cricket just before the Champions Trophy. Although he won’t play ODIs anymore, Stoinis will continue representing Australia in the T20 format. The 35-year-old all-rounder was included in Australia’s preliminary squad for the Champions Trophy, but he has decided to step down, citing a desire to focus on T20 cricket in the final years of his career. Stoinis was a key player in Australia’s World Cup-winning squad in 2023.
Stonis’ ODI career
Stoinis shared his thoughts on his retirement, saying, “Playing ODI cricket for Australia has been an incredible journey, and I’m grateful for every moment I’ve had in the green and gold. This wasn’t an easy decision, but I believe it’s the right time for me to step away from ODIs and fully focus on the next chapter of my career.” Stoinis made his mark after debuting against England at Headingley, scoring 146 not out against New Zealand at Eden Park. His career in ODI cricket saw him score 1,495 runs and take 48 wickets over 74 matches.
Marcus Stoinis achievements
Australia’s coach, Andrew McDonald, praised Stoinis, stating, “Stoin has been such a pivotal part of our ODI setup for the past decade. Not only has he been an invaluable player but also an incredible person to have in the group.” Stoinis, known for his leadership and popularity, was named One Day Player of the Year at the 2019 Australian Cricket Awards. His powerful performance with both bat and ball made him a significant figure in Australia’s ODI victories, including their World Cup campaigns in 2019 and 2023.
