Have Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer have been hard done by the BCCI? The two talented cricketers who were part of the ODI World Cup 2023 have suddenly been dropped from the central contracts. The reason behind this is allegedly their attitude towards domestic cricket.
Many of the India cricket team fans have expressed their disdain for the treatment of two of the most promising prospects, and recently retired domestic great Manoj Tiwary feels the same. Talking with Sports Now, the cricketer-turned-politician said:
“See, removing players (Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan) from central contracts could have been avoided, though I don’t know what conversation they had in between. But now it is an open message to all that if players are available, they have to play domestic cricket, and that is how you have to protect this tournament.”
Who is to blame for Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan’s exclusion?
The answer to this question isn’t easy. Ishan Kishan had taken a break from international cricket due to mental fatigue, and the BCCI respected that. However, Kishan did not return to domestic cricket even three months after taking a break, despite head coach Rahul Dravid stressing that the batter would need to play the Ranji Trophy to get back into India’s Test team. One can assume that Kishan might be in a tough spot as far as his mental health goes, but if that’s the case, why was he playing in the DY Patil T20 tournament?
For Shreyas Iyer, it’s even more perplexing. After getting dropped due to poor form in Test cricket, Iyer was supposed to play for Mumbai. In the Ranji Trophy 2024. The batter complained of a back niggle, but the NCA insisted that he was fit. Who to trust? Player to know his body the best or the medical professionals at the NCA? What’s even worse is that Iyer is back just next week for Mumbai and had announced that before the contracts were announced.
