M Chinnaswamy Stadium Pitch Report: Tricky surface & chasing advantage expected in RCB vs KKR

Historically, the chasing side has a massive advantage in Bengaluru, but what seems like a change in the surface at the Chinnaswamy can lead to some unexpected results.

What sort of pitch can be expected at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium? The previous report would suggest a belter of a surface. But that may have been over, at least for the IPL 2024 season. In their second match at home, the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) may once again roll out a ‘tricky’ surface.

It seems like there is a pitch renaissance at the Chinnaswamy Stadium, with bowlers actually having a say in the outcome of the match. Something that has become a rarity over the years, with batting taking the front seat while the bowlers were discarded in the back.

RCB vs KKR Pitch Report: What to expect at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium?

A batting paradise! That’s often how the pitch at the Chinnaswamy has been described. The belter of a pitch traditionally gets even better in the second half, and the side chasing has a sizeable advantage due to the true batting surface. However, this trend is seemingly changing this year.

In the only match played here so far, the Punjab Kings struggle to get to 176 with the pitch slowing down as the ball gets older in the first inning. Although the chasing side won, they too struggled in the middle overs. This means that we may also see the 200-run mark not get crossed that easily in the IPL 2024 season.

Although teams may defend targets this year, dew will continue to play a role. Irrespective of how helpful the pitch is, if the dew sets in, the team chasing will have a major advantage. Considering the ‘new’ pitches adopted by the Royal Challengers Bangalore and the dew factor, the skipper that wins the toss will likely opt to bat second.
