South African fast bowler Lungi Ngidi has named some of the batting world’s biggest names as his toughest challenges with the ball ahead of the T20 World Cup 2024.
Early success and ongoing challenges for Lungi Ngidi
Lungi Ngidi burst onto the scene with a six-wicket haul on his Test debut against India in 2018. Injuries have hampered his progress since then, but he remains a vital cog in the Proteas bowling attack, boasting over 200 international wickets.
In a recent interview with The Hindu, Ngidi discussed his cricketing journey and the players who have tested him the most.
Bowling Alongside Rabada: A Bromance
“KG [Kagiso Rabada] is one of my best friends,” Ngidi said. “It’s always fun playing with him. We’ve been playing together since we were 16, basically like brothers. We try to create pressure for each other and take wickets in tandem.”
Respect for Indian Pace Attack
While Ngidi acknowledged the skills of experienced Indian seamers like Mohammed Shami and Umesh Yadav, he reserved special praise for a rising star: “The most impressive for me has been Mohammed Siraj. He showed a lot of promise early on and keeps getting better.”
Facing the Big Five: Warner, Williamson, Kohli, Smith, Babar
“We all know the big three – Kane Williamson, Virat Kohli and Steve Smith,” Ngidi said. “Then there’s Babar Azam. These guys have earned their reputations, and you know it’ll be a challenge whenever they’re at the crease. I’d also add David Warner to that list. They’ve been my biggest challenges as a bowler.”

Ngidi also spoke fondly about his time with the Chennai Super Kings in the IPL. “Playing for CSK, the team I always supported growing up, was a dream come true,” he said. “Winning the title was amazing, but sharing the dressing room with legends like MS Dhoni was truly special.”
Life Beyond Cricket for Lungi Ngidi
Lungi Ngidi revealed his hobbies outside of cricket. “I love spending time with loved ones and learning new things,” he said. “I even play a bit of piano – not great, but good for unwinding.” When it comes to music, Ngidi is a self-proclaimed “big fan” of Kid Cudi.
Ngidi’s hunger to learn and his well-rounded personality are sure to serve him well as he looks to spearhead the South African attack in the upcoming T20 World Cup.
