Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) management would have breathed a sigh of relief. Their captain, Pat Cummins, has provided a fitness update before the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season. The Australian pacer had injured his ankle during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, which ended in early January.
Pat Cummins on track to play IPL 2025 opener
Subsequently, Cummins missed the entire Australia Test and ODI tour of Sri Lanka as well as the ICC Champions Trophy. Undergoing rehab, the fast bowler reckons he’ll be available for the IPL 2025 season. Cummins hasn’t started bowling yet, but given the 18th edition of the league will start on March 22, he could be on track for the SRH vs KKR tournament opener.
“The ankle is all going strong, [have been] able to give it a good rest and then been building up slowly, which you don’t get to do when you play lots of cricket. It’s feeling as strong as it has for a fair while. Should be fine [for the IPL]; that’s the plan. So have a few weeks of bowling, building back up, and then hopefully don’t have to worry about it for a while,” Cummins told ESPNcricinfo.

Injury, part of the game
The SRH skipper added that missing certain tours is part of the game, especially as a fast bowler. Many quicks from all different teams aren’t playing in the ICC Champions Trophy. For India, Jasprit Bumrah isn’t there, Anrich Nortje and Gerald Coetzee are for South Africa, and Brydon Carse just got injured as well. In fact, Josh Hazlewood, Cummins’ teammate, isn’t fit either.
“It’s something that we’ve opted never to have surgery on or intervene too much, just a lot to rehab. Having this break meant that I could get a couple of cortisones and really rehab it well the last couple of weeks. Sometimes by missing the odd tour, you actually end up playing more cricket for the whole year. I think in the past you used to play everything, whereas now, absolutely, you try and make sure the players are at their peak for as long as you can for the year and to play as much of the important stuff each year. It’s just the way of the world. Everyone’s used to it,” Cummins added.
