Kyle Mayers scored a stunning half-century on their IPL debut as Lucknow Super Giants made their presence felt on the home ground. Mayers started steadily with some movement on offer for the Capitals pacers. He received a reprieve, with Khaleel Ahmed dropping an absolute sitter at short third man for 14.
Highest score in debut IPL innings
- 158* Brendon McCullum KKR vs RCB Bengaluru 2008
- 116* Michael Hussey CSK vs PBKS Mohali 2008
- 84* Shaun Marsh PBKS vs Deccan Hyderabad 2008
- 73 Kyle Mayers LSG vs DC Lucknow 2023
Given a second chance, Mayers accepted it with both hands. He took the attack to Mukesh Kumar, hitting the biggest six of IPL 2023 so far. He then continued his assault on Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav. The West Indian reached his half-century in just 28 balls.
He eventually managed 73 on his debut, the fourth-highest by a debutant in the IPL. Brendon McCullum, Michael Hussey and Shaun Marsh. The 30-year-old hit only two fours and hit seven sixes.
Such was the ferocity of his innings, LSG now has selection troubles. Mayers was largely considered a backup for Quinton de Kock. But with his innings, he has forced himself into the reckoning. The 30-year-old will have another crack in the game against CSK, before Quinton de Kock joins LSG after international commitments.
