Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) will announce their captain for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season on January 20. Founder and chairman of RPSG Group, Sanjiv Goenka, will hold a special press conference in Kolkata and reveal who’ll lead LSG in the 18th edition of the IPL, according to RevSportz journalist Debasis Sen.
Nicholas Pooran or Rishabh Pant: Who’ll be the LSG captain?
Having decided to release KL Rahul, LSG had just one captaincy candidate before the IPL 2025 auction. However, after acquiring Rishabh Pant for a record-breaking Rs 27 crore in Jeddah, they have two options (Nicholas Pooran being the other). Aiden Markram is the only other option; he’s led the Sunrisers Hyderabad, rather unsuccessfully, in the IPL but has claimed two titles in the SA20 with Sunrisers Eastern Cape.
Rishabh Pant, the only viable option
Pant being announced as the captain seems the only logical option. Had they wanted Pooran to lead, they wouldn’t have spent more than 20% of their total purse on one single player (Pant). Of course, the wicketkeeper has plenty of experience in leading a team in the IPL.
Pant was Delhi Capitals captain for three seasons (2021, 2022, and 2024) and was their best skipper since Virender Sehwag, who led in 52 matches compared to Pant’s 43. He should slot right in and take over from KL Rahul with ease. Their team looks balanced, and with Pant in the middle order, their batting is expected to be better than last year at least.
