Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) have successfully avenged their IPL 2024 loss against the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). The pre-match hype for this encounter was just about if SRH would notch up the 300-mark or not. The conditions were in their favour, LSG had an injury-stricken bowling attack and the likes of Ishan Kishan, Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head were in immense form.
But the Shardul Thakur-led bowling of LSG stamped their authority to take their first two points of IPL 2025. In fact, SRH couldn’t even make 200 and fifties from Marsh and Nicholas Pooran helped LSG to win the encounter by 5 wickets. Catch how every LSG player did in the high-octane match at Uppal.
Aiden Markram (1/10):
LSG don’t have specialist openers and hence Aiden Markram has been getting chances at IPL 2025. After a decent outing in the last game, Markram had an innings to forget. He made only one run but that too came via a risky single. The Protea handed a single catch to help SRH make early inroad in the game.
Mitchell Marsh, the Impact Sub (8.5/10):
Continuing his run to wreak havoc his former franchises, Mitchell Marsh now has two back to back fifties to start his IPL 2025. The ‘Bison’ clamoured 52 off 31 runs, keeping LSG ahead of the game even after Pooran’s dismissal. He was comfortable facing Mohammed Shami and Simarjeet Singh, that was important for LSG.
Nicholas Pooran (10/10): Beast
Nicholas Pooran was on an absolute roll. The Rs 21 crore retention showed why he’s one of the most dangerous batters in the league, hammering the fastest IPL 2025 fifty in just 18 balls. Coming in after the early wicket of Markram, Pooran wasted no time in making his intentions clear. He was particularly ruthless against Simarjeet Singh and Abhishek Sharma, smashing consecutive sixes off both bowlers. His strike rate was 269.23, a massive reason why LSG went over the line in the chase.
Rishabh Pant (4/10): Rs 27cr on his mind?
Another ordinary performance by the costliest player in IPL history. Despite not getting settled on the crease, Rishabh Pant did way too much in terms of maneuverism. He got a wake-up bouncer as his maiden delivery and tried to scoop Cummins the very next ball. All in all, Pant managed just 15 off 15 and was out at a crucial juncture. Had Abdul Samad not hit timely blows, the after-effects of Pant’s wicket could’ve been massive.
Shardul Thakur (10/10): Purple cap holder
Shardul Thakur would’ve accepted the fact that he found no bidders at IPL 2025. But now, the “Lord” holds the IPL 2025 Purple Cap. He killed the SRH batting innings within his first spell. In fact, he got rid of Abhishek and Kishan on back-to-back balls before coming on and dismissing two more batters. Having taken 20 wickets in his last 10 T20 matches, we all know this is Shardul Thakur’s era, and we are just living in it!
Avesh Khan (6.5/10): Ordinary comeback
LSG got a major boost as Avesh Khan got clearance from the NCA, as he joined the team one day before this game. Coming on the back of an injury, it wasn’t ideal for Avesh. He leaked the most runs (45) at the most expensive economy (11.20). Pat Cummins hit him for consecutive sixes before he got holed out on the boundary.
Digvesh Rathi & Ravi Bishnoi (7/10): Leggies
The two leggies are very similar to each other. Both Digvesh Rathi and Ravi Bishnoi depend upon googlies and have a faster trajectory to make it difficult for the batters. However, they leaked 82 runs in their 8 overs, basically going at 10.25 together. Having said that, both took a crucial wicket each. While Rathi sent back good-looking Aniket Verma (36 off 13), Bishnoi cleaned up Nitish Kumar Reddy (32).
Prince Yadav (9/10): New talent emerges
Not many knew Prince Yadav prior to this game. But now, he done himself a huge favour by contributing in LSG’s win. The skiddy pacer from Delhi took perhaps the most important wicket of the night when he clean bowled Travis Head just before his 50. After that, he got Heinrich Klaasen through a lucky run-out as well!
Also, a special shoutout for Abdul Samad, who saved the day for LSG, who were in a nervy situation after losing Pant. His 22* off just 8 balls was of paramount importance.
