South Africa’s Matthew Breetzke has thrown his hat in the ring to be Lucknow Super Giants‘ new opener for IPL 2025. The Proteas top-order batter slammed a century against New Zealand in the Tri-Nation series in Pakistan on Monday. Breetzke was bagged by LSG for Rs 57 lakh in the IPL 2025 auction.
Breetzke LSG’s new opener for IPL 2025?
Although Breetzke is relatively new to T20Is, having played only ten matches in the format, he has sufficient experience in playing in the shortest format. Against New Zealand on Monday, he went past the 150-run mark in what was a dominating display of batting. Not only this, he became the first batter to hammer 150 on his ODI debut. His knock, en route to his 150, was studded with 11 fours and 5 sixes, striking at 101.35.
In T20s, he has 2783 runs from 112 matches and averages 27.98. Although he has a better track record in List A and first-class record, he could prove to be a gem for LSG in IPL 2025.

LSG are on the lookout for a new set of openers, having released Quinton de Kock and KL Rahul ahead of IPL 2025 auction. While Mitchell Marsh and Aiden Markram emerge as frontrunners for the roles, the former’s lower back injury will probably force LSG to look for other options ahead of IPL 2025. While he has a better experience of batting in T20Is at number 3 and 4, he could prove to be benificial for LSG at the top, especially given his performance against New Zealand.
