LSG coach Justin Langer ‘humbled like never before’ after his visit to Mumbai’s Dharavi slums

During his visit, Langer engaged with the local community, witnessing firsthand the daily struggles and unwavering optimism of the residents

Lucknow Super Giant head coach, Justin Langer shared a transformative experience that redefined his perspective on life. In a recent interview, he revealed how his visit to the LSG physiotherapist Rajesh Chandrashekhar’s house in the slums of Mumbai profoundly impacted him. Langer, who has achieved remarkable success in cricket both as a player and a coach, found this visit during the IPL 2024 to be a stark reminder of what truly matters in life.

“After a life of living what I would now define as extreme luxury, I was humbled like never before seeing how other human beings live their day-to-day lives.” Justin Langer wrote on The Nightly.

Reflecting on his time in Mumbai, the Lucknow Super Giants head coach described the trip as an eye-opener. “My trip to the slums of Mumbai opened my eyes to what really matters in life,” Langer added, emphasizing the profound simplicity he witnessed among the people there. Despite living in extremely challenging conditions, their spirit and sense of community left a lasting impression on him.

During his visit, Langer engaged with the local community, witnessing firsthand the daily struggles and unwavering optimism of the residents. He was particularly struck by the children’s joy and enthusiasm, despite their lack of material possessions. This experience, he noted, made him reevaluate his own life and priorities. “Seeing their smiles and hearing their stories made me realize how much we often take for granted,” he added.

Langer’s reflections also highlighted the importance of gratitude and empathy. He remarked on the contrast between the material wealth often associated with success in professional sports and the rich, non-material values he observed in the slums. “It’s easy to get caught up in the pursuit of success and forget what truly matters. This visit reminded me of the value of human connections and the importance of giving back.”

‘Simple’ Justin Langer defines ‘remedies for happiness’

As a coach, Langer has always emphasized the mental and emotional aspects of the game. This experience has reinforced his belief in nurturing these aspects, not just for success on the field but for personal growth and fulfilment. He hopes to inspire his players to appreciate the broader aspects of life and to remain grounded, regardless of their success.

‘What struck me about our visit to RC’s house was that while they seemed to have nothing, they also had everything they really needed to be happy.’

‘Family and friends — call me simple — but these are pretty much the remedies for happiness, regardless of all the other stuff.’ Langer concluded.
