LIVE Cricket Commentary: ‘Death Overs’ term to be abolished? Former Indian cricketer turned commentator Laxman Sivaramakrishnan took to social media to put up a special request to fellow cricketing commentators all over the globe. The former Indian spinner requested other commentators to avoid using a special word during the commentary of the games. He asked commentators to avoid using the word ‘Death overs’ in ODI and T20 matches as it serves a negative impact during the Covid pandemic.
The death overs are referred to as the last 10 overs in an ODI game while the last 5 overs in a T20I game. It is particularly in these overs when the batting teams become aggressive in scoring runs to pick up a huge total, while on the other hand, the bowling team strategizes how to effectively pick up more wickets along with conceding minimal runs.
Laxman Sivaramakrishnan has requested fellow commentators to not use the term ‘Death overs’.LIVE Cricket Commentary: Sivaramakrishnan pleads with all Global cricket commentators not to call Slog overs as ‘Death Overs’, check why?
He wrote, “Request to all commentators, please don’t say ‘DEATH OVERS’. Either call it slog overs or end overs. We are going through a tough time. Death is not a nice word. The last ten overs are definitely important overs but one doesn’t die if it doesn’t go the team’s way.”

Speaking about the final overs in an innings, when the excitement of the game is potentially at its peak, these overs are often termed as ‘Death overs’. However, Sivaramakrishnan has his own views about this cliched word. He prefers using terms such as end overs or slog overs rather than using the death overs term.
This comes in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic that has plagued the planet for over 2 years. Owing to this pandemic there have been numerous deaths, and thus Laxman Sivaramakrishnan feels that using the term death overs in cricket brings about a negative connotation to the same. Moreover, with the recent rise in the cases of Covid due to its new Omicron variant, a 3rd wave of the pandemic can be imminent and thus Sivaramakrishnan’s words make much sense looking at the current situation.
