One of the most successful IPL franchises, Mumbai Indians, have announced their head coach for IPL 2025 as they called back their most successful coach, Mahela Jayawardene, to the camp. He will replace Mark Boucher, who was with the team for the last two seasons. This Sri Lankan maestro played a huge role starting from 2017 when he first took over, leading to a series of trophies under his helm. Jayawardene has won three IPL trophies with the Mumbai Indians in 2017, 2019, and 2020. But with a poor run in the 2022 season, which was Jayawardene’s last, MI began the 2022 season poorly, losing their first eight matches, the worst in IPL history. They ended the tournament with four wins out of 14 matches, finishing last. However, but in IPL 2024 under Mark Boucher saw similar results, MI decided to return to Jayawardene. Who can MI retain ahead of IPL 2025?
Apart from the coaching staff, the biggest question getting the heat is which players MI should retain ahead of IPL 2025 mega auction. There are many discussions about whether Rohit Sharma will be retained or not, and what will happen to Hardik Pandya, will he remain captain for now? Since franchises need to submit their five retained players before 31st October, they have extremely limited time to decide. Currently, it seems likely that we may see Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, and Jasprit Bumrah as their sure-shot retained players.
