Lions not enough, India will face India ‘A’ in Kent to prepare for England Test tour

India's 5-match Test tour of England will commence on June 20 at Headingley.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) are leaving no stone unturned when it comes to preparing for the England tour. The BCCI had made an agreement with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) before, by which India ‘A’ will play two 4-day practice matches against England Lions. Now, the India cricket team will play against their ‘A’ team as well.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season will end on May 25, and just four days later, May 30 to June 2, India A will face the England Lions at the Spitfire Ground, St Lawrence in Canterbury. The next practice match will be played from June 6 to June 9 at the County Ground in Northampton.

India vs India A to prepare for England Tests

But the BCCI thinks that there should be an intra-squad match as well. According to Cricbuzz, there will be an India vs India A match in Beckenham. Team India are expected to reach England in the second week of June, and the intra-squad game will be played around June 13.

It’s expected that some players will reach England before, especially those whose teams don’t qualify for the IPL 2025 Playoffs. The last group stage will be played on May 18, which will give players time to rest and recover before preparing for the 5-match Test tour.

BCCI yet to decide squad or captain

The BCCI aren’t sure yet about the selection of the India ‘A’ team which will face the England Lions. They seem to be torn about picking the main players like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma or Rishabh Pant, many of whom have been out of form or domestic performers.

A call on the captaincy will be taken as well. Rohit’s performance in the IPL 2025 season might play a role in his selection as the designated skipper. One can’t forget vice-captain Jasprit Bumrah is currently injured. His fitness could play a role as well.
