‘Let the young man play’: Gambhir warns against over-hyping Jaiswal’s achievements

IND vs ENG: This was Yashasvi Jaiswal's second ton in Tests, with his first coming against West Indies, last year.

Yashasvi Jaiswal has truly announced himself on the big stage with his 209 against England in the second Test at Vizag. On a pitch where no other Indian batsman could cross 34, let alone fifty, Jaiswal took the attack to the opposition, and put the team in the driver’s seat.

For his efforts, Jaiswal is getting praise from all nooks and corners. But former India opener Gautam Gambhir believes that the youngster should not be burdened with tags, and should be allowed to enjoy the game.

“I want to congratulate the youngster for his achievement but, more importantly, I want to tell everyone that let the young man play. We have seen in the past that in India we have a habit, especially the media, to over-hype their achievements and give them tags and make them look like heroes,” Gambhir told PTI.

“The pressure of expectation gets the better of them and the players are not able to play their natural game. Let him grow and enjoy his cricket.”

In his swashbuckling 209, Jaiswal hit 19 fours and seven sixes.
