The 41-year-old former India off-spinner had recently announced his retirement from all forms of the game, bringing down curtains on an illustrious career that spanned 24 years.
He made his international debut in 1998 as a 17-year old against Australia in a Test match at Bengaluru and went on to play 103 Tests, 236 ODIs and 28 T20Is for Men in Blue, scalping 294 wickets in limited-overs cricket and 417 wickets in Test matches, making him the fourth-highest wicket-taker for India in Test matches.
His last red-ball match was against Sri Lanka in 2015 while his last ODI was against South Africa in the same year. His last international appearance for the men in blue was in a T20I during the 2016 Asia Cup. He was overlooked from the Indian side after that.
Harbhajan however continued playing in the IPL. Until 2017, he was part of the Mumbai Indians while in 2018, he was picked up in the auction by Chennai Super Kings. He played two seasons for the four-time champions before missing the 2020 edition. He was released before the auction last year and Kolkata Knight Riders successfully bid for him at his base price of 2 crores for the 2021 season. Overall he has featured in 163 IPL matches and scalped 150 wickets at an average of 27.08 and an economy of 7.08.
