Former India spinner Bishan Singh Bedi has passed away the age of 77. The legendary spinner played 67 Tests and picked 266 wickets. He also took seven wickets in 10 ODIs.
Bedi, who was born in Amritsar in 1944, played for Delhi in the domestic circuit, and was the leading wicket-taker in First-Class cricket with 1,560 wickets in 370 matches.
He began his international cricket career in 1966. His most notable contribution was in India’s first-ever ODI win in World Cup 1975. Bedi registered a figure of 12-8-6-1 against East Africa in the tournament to help India win to their first World Cup match.
Bedi also took a leadership role in Indian team and played a key role in India’s historic 1971 series victory against England. Bedi captained the team in the absence of the injured Ajit Wadekar, and led the side to a historic series win.
The legendary spinner was also one of the most successful overseas players in the English County. He featured for Northamptonshire in 102 games, and picked up 434 wickets for the Northants, which is still the most by an Indian in County cricket.
