KL Rahul’s wicketkeeping venture gets huge boost, Aussie legend backs Indian gamble

The former Australian wicketkeeper drew parallels with other cricketing greats like AB de Villiers and Kumar Sangakkara, who successfully balanced multiple facets of the game.

Australian cricket legend Adam Gilchrist has weighed in on the bold experiment of deploying KL Rahul as a wicketkeeper-batsman in the Indian team, providing a reality check and expressing confidence in Rahul’s capabilities for the long haul.

In the absence of Rishabh Pant, Rahul has shouldered the dual responsibility of wicketkeeping and batting during the challenging Test series in South Africa. The 31-year-old has emerged as one of India’s standout performers, showcasing his proficiency in both aspects of the game.

Adam Gilchrist, known for his extraordinary prowess as a wicketkeeper-batter, believes that KL Rahul possesses the necessary skills to excel in all three formats of cricket. In an interview with Fox Cricket’s podcast “The Follow On,” Gilchrist expressed admiration for Rahul’s calm demeanor and versatility as a cricketer.

“He is a wonderful cricketer. He has such a calm personality. A calm cricketer. I love watching him play,” remarked Gilchrist.

The Australian legend highlighted KL Rahul significant impact in Test, One Day International (ODI), and T20 cricket, emphasizing his consistency in various formats. Gilchrist also commended Rahul’s role in the Indian Premier League (IPL), where he has been a dominant force over the years.

KL Rahul: The wicketkeeper

Rahul’s remarkable contributions in the ongoing South African series include a century in the opening Test and active involvement in several dismissals during the second Test at Newlands. Despite a notable performance, India faced a dramatic collapse, losing 6 wickets for zero runs in response to South Africa’s 55, with KL Rahul dismissed for eight.

While Gilchrist acknowledged Rahul’s need for improvement in his wicketkeeping skills, he underscored the cricketer’s potential success with dedication and hard work.

“I don’t think his wicketkeeping is, in any way or shape, as polished as a lot of the mainstream wicketkeepers. But if India feels that is the team balance that they want to have, I think he has done really well to justify his selection,” Gilchrist stated.

The former Australian wicketkeeper drew parallels with other cricketing greats like AB de Villiers and Kumar Sangakkara, who successfully balanced multiple facets of the game, emphasizing the modern trend of maximizing players’ talents.

Rahul Dravid, India’s coach, had previously mentioned Rahul’s eagerness to take on the wicketkeeping role. Gilchrist recognized the challenge for KL Rahul, emphasizing the importance of dedication. However, he expressed confidence that if Rahul remains committed and puts in the necessary effort, he can sustain his dual role over an extended period.
