KL Rahul wicket-keeping role faces scrutiny from Gambhir as India awaits long-term plan

In recent times, India has experimented with KS Bharat and Ishan Kishan as wicketkeepers, but with Pant recovering from a car accident last year, the team faces uncertainty in this crucial position.

As India gears up for the crucial Test series against South Africa (IND vs SA), the spotlight is on KL Rahul, who is set to take on the wicketkeeping responsibilities due to the absence of Rishabh Pant. While the move may seem like a short-term solution, former cricketer Gautam Gambhir expresses concerns about the lack of a long-term plan for the wicketkeeping role in the Indian Test team.

In recent times, India has experimented with KS Bharat and Ishan Kishan as wicketkeepers, but with Pant recovering from a car accident last year, the team faces uncertainty in this crucial position.

Gautam Gambhir notes that despite the team’s struggles, the decision to hand over the gloves to Rahul for the South Africa series is a pragmatic move.

KS Bharat vs Ishan Kishan vs KL Rahul

Gautam Gambhir acknowledges that KS Bharat, who was part of the Border-Gavaskar series and the World Test Championship final, and Ishan Kishan, who performed impressively against the West Indies, were both contenders for the role. However, Kishan opted out of the South Africa tour due to personal reasons, leaving Bharat and Rahul as the primary options.

In a pre-series interview with Star Sports, Gambhir points out that Rahul’s real test will come during the home series against England in February. He emphasizes that handling spinners like Ashwin, Jadeja, and Axar on turning pitches will be a significant challenge for the 31-year-old batsman-wicketkeeper.

Gambhir expresses hope that Rahul’s wicketkeeping stint in South Africa isn’t a one-off and suggests that he should continue in the role until Pant’s return, expected later in 2024. While Gambhir believes the decision for the South Africa series is a practical short-term solution, he urges a more comprehensive, long-term plan to secure India’s wicketkeeping future in Test cricket.

As India enters its second assignment in the new World Test Championship cycle, Gambhir’s observations highlight the importance of addressing the wicketkeeping conundrum for sustained success in the longest format of the game.
