KL Rahul to fill Rohit Sharma’s opening void in BGT opener? Likely to open in IND A vs AUS A clash

KL Rahul and Abhimanyu Easwaran will have a direct face-off for Rohit Sharma's opening spot in the first BGT Test.

And the musical chairs of KL Rahul’s batting position continues to give! Yes, as per the latest reports, the star batter is likely to open the batting for India A in their next four-day clash against Australia A. This indicates that the team management is looking to place KL Rahul in the opening slot when Rohit Sharma becomes unavailable at the start of the much-awaited Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT). KL Rahul and Dhruv Jurel were added to the Indian A team right after the humiliating whitewash against New Zealand.

Face-off for opening slot between KL Rahul & Easwaran

According to ESPNcricinfo, KL Rahul is all set to face the red cherry at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) alongside Abhimanyu Easwaran. Easwaran is the same talented batter, who was touted to replace Rohit Sharma in the playing XI when the Indian captain leaves for paternity leave. However, the India A vs Australia A match could serve as a crucial audition for the coveted opening spot in the first Test against Australia, scheduled for November 22nd in Perth. If KL bats as an opener, this will mean that India A skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad moves to the number three slot.

With Rohit Sharma’s participation in the early stages of the tour uncertain, Rahul’s experience and adaptability make him a strong contender. While he has been excelling in the middle order recently, his past success as an opener, particularly his centuries in England, South Africa, and Australia, cannot be ignored.

Abhimanyu Easwaran, on the other hand, has been in exceptional form in domestic cricket, scoring centuries consistently. His recent performances have earned him a spot in the Test squad, and the Melbourne four-day clash will be a vital chance for him to showcase his mettle. In all first-class cricket, Abhimanyu has 27 centuries in 100 matches, and averages 49.40.

KL Rahul to pip Easwaran?

Rahul, on the other hand, has recently shifted to the middle order, showcasing improved form with a solid average of 37.66 in his last 10 Test innings. However, his extensive experience opening the batting overseas, including centuries in England, South Africa, and Australia, makes him a compelling option. Despite his overall record as an opener (2551 runs at 34.94 in 75 innings), his ability to perform under pressure and his familiarity with Australian conditions could sway the selectors in his favor.
