KER beat MAH: R Gaikwad’s century in vain as Vishnu Vinod and S Joseph guide Kerala to 4 wickets win over Maharashtra

Put into bat, Maharashtra skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad continued his fine form and slammed the third ton in a row. Maharashtra had a shaky start as they were reduced to 22/2 inside the powerplay but Gaikwad and Rahul Tripathi stitched a 195-run stand for the third wicket and resurrected the innings. Tripathi missed a well-deserved century by just a run as he departed on 99 runs while Ruturaj Gaikwad scored 124 off 129 deliveries.

Gaikwad hit nine fours and three sixes and got out to debutant seamer Suresh Vishweshar in the 46th over while trying to step up the run rate. Maharashtra could have gone past the 300-run mark but managed just 42 runs in the final-five to notch a below-par 291/8 in the stipulated 50 overs. On Gaikwad’s day, it was Kerala seamer M D Nidheesh who stole the show with a stunning 5/49 including the vital.

Coming to chase, Kerala too had a shaky start and lost two wickets inside the powerplay. At one time, Kerala’s score read 120/6 and the game was in complete control of Maharashtra. But, Vishnu Vinod’s unbeaten 100 and Sijomon Joseph’s 71 guided the side over the line with 4 wickets in hand. The duo put on an undefeated 174-run stand to steer the team home in 48.5 overs.

Gaikwad now has 414 runs to his name in three innings at an insane average of 207 to make his case even stronger for the upcoming South Africa ODI series.
