Karun Nair doesn’t warrant spot in ODI team, should target IND vs ENG Tests

IND vs ENG: Karun Nair could be in contention for a spot in the Test team, if he goes on to have a stellar Ranji Trophy season from here on.

Karun Nair has been bit of a revelation in this Vijay Hazare Trophy, where in seven matches he has already scored 664 runs at an average of a staggering 664. He has slammed five tons in the process and strike-rate has been at 120. Many believe that after a gap of nine years, the now Vidarbha player could be only his way back into the Indian side, albeit in the ODI side.

Karun Nair in IND vs ENG Tests?

There is an IND vs ENG ODI series lined up, to be followed by the Champions Trophy from Feb 19. But then, one feels, he might still not get a chance to represent the nation in the white-ball formats, and Test cricket is where he could actually make c comeback after 2016.

Look, there are many options available in the middle-order for the ODIs and T20Is, and Tests is where the middle-order has struggled largely in the last couple of years. Since 2022, Virat Kohli has only scored 1187 runs in 22 Tests at an average of 32. Other options tried by India haven’t been good either.

Ranji Trophy Performance Could Lead to India Comeback?

In 6 Tests, Sarfaraz Khan has scored 371 runs at an average of 37. That includes one ton and three fifties. Other major players include KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant. In this period, Rahul has played 6 Tests in the middle-order, from No. 4 to No. 6, and his numbers are good either. He has scored 339 runs only at an average of 37, including one ton and two fifties.

Only Pant has been a little decent. In 12 such matches, he has scored 816 runs at an average of 40. Just one ton has come his way there. On the other hand, Karun Nair till now in this current Ranji Trophy season has 289 runs in 4 matches, at an average of 48, apart from his VHT exploits.
