Karun Nair backs captain Axar Patel, despite childhood friend KL Rahul being snubbed by Delhi Capitals

It was expected that KL Rahul, who had led Punjab Kings and Lucknow Super Giants, would be named captain. But Delhi Capitals did otherwise.

Karun Nair has returned to the Indian Premier League (IPL) after two years. And as luck would have it, he’s returned to a franchise with whom he spent two years, Delhi Capitals (DC). Although the team’s name was different back then, Delhi Daredevils.

He’ll play under Axar Patel after leading the franchise himself in 2017. Had it been his wish, he might have wanted his childhood friend, KL Rahul, to be DC’s captain for IPL 2025. Just one year apart in age, both played for Karnataka for years.

Axar Patel going to be a great captain: Karun Nair

Playing under Rahul might have been easier for Nair. Both would have a great understanding, and he could ask his captain about whether he’s in the scheme of things. But of course, that won’t be the case.

Nair is just grateful to be back and is sure that Axar will do a fine job in his maiden season as captain. As an all-rounder, he knows perspectives as a batter and bowler. He was also upgraded to India’s vice-captain in T20Is earlier in the year, showing the management trusts him as well.

“Axar has been around for a long time now, and he is going to be a great captain. He is someone who knows all the facets of the game and understands everyone’s situation and roles. He will be versatile like he always is, looking forward to meeting him and knowing a lot of things,” said during an interaction with the media.
