Williamson will now head home to New Zealand for further assessment. The Gujarat Titans will finalise a replacement for the right-handed batter and an announcement will be made in due course.

Blackcaps coach Gary Stead revealed a conversation with Williamsonafter the injury.

“Our first thoughts are obviously with him, we’re not sure at this stage of the severity of the injury. He’s being assessed in the next 24-48 hours, so we will know more after that,” said Stead, who had spoken to Williamson since the incident and found him in “OK” spirits,” Gary Stead said.

IPL 2023: Stead feels worried for Kane Williamson

“It doesn’t look good. But the physios are taking a look. Hopefully, he will be okay,” GT head coach Gary Kirsten said on Star Sports. After Kristen, even Stead is feels the injury will take time to heal. With the 50-over World Cup in October, Stead is feeling worried for Williamson.

“All we know at this stage is it’s his right knee. Unfortunately, I can’t give you much more than that now until we find out more information.

“It’s not nice to see anyone, let alone your captain of your white ball team, being injured. It’s a big blow for him, and it’s a big blow for us.”

What exactly happened?

Williamson tried to save a six off Ruturaj Gaikwad. But he missed a footing and jarred his knee. Physios had to be rushed in as the Kiwi captain fell to the ground clutching his knee. He was taken off the field immediately, Sai Sudarshan replaced him for the remainder of the match.

Williamson was shown the door after a poor season with Sunrisers Hyderabad. While he went unsold in the first round, GT snapped him up at a base price of Rs 2 Cr. However, he hasn’t had the debut he expected. IPL 2023 has already been plagued with injuries. GT will hope that his injury isn’t a serious one. The Kiwi captain has had knee trouble in the past.
