Jonny Bairstow to be dropped before 100th Test? Vaughan worried about England star future

Jonny Bairstow has struggled since returning from injury last year, averaging just 30.75 in 10 Tests with a top score of 99.

India vs England 5th Test: Jonny Bairstow is set for a landmark 100th Test appearance for England in Dharamsala, but his place in the team beyond that remains in question. Former England captain, Michael Vaughan, expressed concerns about Bairstow’s recent form, suggesting his future selection hinges on a strong performance in the upcoming match.

Jonny Bairstow struggles

Jonny Bairstow has struggled since returning from injury last year, averaging just 30.75 in 10 Tests with a top score of 99. His struggles continued in the ongoing series against India, managing only 170 runs in four innings at an average of 21.25.

Michael Vaughan acknowledged the significance of Bairstow’s 100th Test, but emphasized the importance of current form. “It’s a great triumph of resilience,” he said in hic column in The Telegraph, “but he could miss out on his 101st. He hasn’t played well enough across the 10 Tests.”

What about Ben Foakes?

Furthermore, Vaughan raised concerns about wicket-keeper Ben Foakes’ batting style, suggesting it might not be compatible with England’s aggressive approach.

While acknowledging Foakes’ exceptional keeping in India, Vaughan noted his struggles to contribute significantly with the bat. Foakes has scored 173 runs at a strike rate of 37.44 throughout the series.

Both Jonny Bairstow and Ben Foakes have a crucial opportunity to prove their worth in the final Test against India. Their performances will be closely watched as England seeks to end the series on a high note, and potentially secure Bairstow a place in the team beyond his landmark 100th appearance.
