IND vs ENG Dharamsala Test: Joe Root heaps praise for Ravi Ashwin, points difference between Ashwin and Lyon

Ahead of the IND vs ENG 5th Test in Dharamsala, Joe Root has opened up on the challenges to face Ravichandran Ashwin. The Indian all-rounder boasts of having dispatched Joe Root a record 7 times in Test cricket. The English star batter claims that Ashwin tries different ways to get a batter out, which far different from other bowlers like Nathon Lyon.

Joe Root returned to form in the Ranchi Test. After a dull series, he slammed an unbeaten ton, albeit in came in a losing case. But ahead of the IND vs ENG Dharamshala Test, Root reveals the dangers of facing Ashwin, who will be playing his 100th Test match of his career.

“I’d say with Ashwin, (it) is making sure that you don’t play the previous ball. He’s (Ashwin) very good at trying to drag you across the crease, get your head one side of it, try and beat both edges quite frequently,” Root said in a SkySports vodcast.

Comparisons are often drawn of Ashwin with Australia’s ace spinner Nathan Lyon. But Root on the other hand went on to explain the differences between the two bowlers. He claimed that Lyon weighs down a batter over a long period while Ashwin tries different ways to dismiss the batter.

“With Lyon, it’s all about overspin, especially in the first half of the Test match. (He) is (trying) to get really over the top of the ball, get bounce or bowling between your knee-roll and hip, and, try and bring short leg and leg slip in the game as much as he can. And then just slowly get slower with his pace and drift wider into those footholds that Mitchell Starc has so kindly done for him for such a long period of time,” Root claimed

While the series is done and dusted, England however will be eyeing for a consolation win. Ashwin ready to play his 100th Test match will be ready to battle all the odds. He will be keen to bag as many wickets as possible to make the match even more memorable.

“Ashwin is, probably, slightly more trying to find ways of getting you out, rather than trying to weigh you down like Lyon will over long periods of time,” Joe Root concluded.
