Former England skipper Alastair Cook has labeled Joe Root as the country’s greatest batter as he latter continues to pile runs in the longest format of the game. Root scored his 34tth Test century as he tormented Sri Lanka in ENG vs SL 2nd Test on Saturday. Speaking on BBC, Cook claimed that the world was watching a genius in play and that it waw a delight to watch the craftsman at work.
‘Joe Root is England’s greatest’
Cook recalled when he met Joe Root for the first time, revealing that he had claimed that the batter would go on to make 10,000 runs for England. root’s 103-run knock was the only highlight in England’s 2nd innings as the other batters hardly managed to go past 30 runs.
“He is quite simply England’s greatest, and it’s right that he should have this record, on his own. We are watching a genius,” commented Alastair Cook on BBC.

“I don’t think there’s a batsman that I can remember watching play…the sense of inevitability about scoring runs that Joe Root gives off. I called it when he was on about 6 today, that he was going to get 100. I know he’s in great form, but it’s just a pleasure to watch a master, a craftsman at work,” he added.
Root magic saves England on Day 1
The 7th highest run-scorer in Test history was saved early in his innings when the on-field umpire struck down an appeal. Root would’ve had to walk back if the umpire had raised his finger, but it wasn’t to be for Sri Lanka.
He capitalized on that reprieve. Milking the bowlers for singles and hitting a boundary ever so often. Ben Duckett and Harry Brook failed to build on their early starts. 130/4 it was, with just one recognized batter in Jaime Smith to come. Cut to the end of the first day, England were 358/7. Root scored 143 of these runs.
