Jay Shah set to become ICC chairman for two consecutive terms, approval from members pending: Report

Jay Shah, who was elected unopposed as the ICC chairman earlier this year, can potentially lead the board for six years in two terms

BCCI secretary Jay Shah can potentially be the ICC chairman for the next 6 years when he takes charge on December 1. The Indian administrator was elected unopposed as Greg Barclay’s replacement earlier this year. The proposal to alter the tenure of the terms was made at the meeting of the board members in Dubai recently.

Jay Shah set to lead ICC for 6 years

As per ESPNCricinfo, the board members arrived at a consensus that the term for the chairman and the independent director should be changed. Instead of the traditional three terms of two years each, the members recommended that the chairman serve two terms of three years each. ICC informed that the recommendation has been circulated among all members for their approval.

The report further claims that the recommendation was made public as a part of ICC’s “drive for better governance”. The ICC Board justified its recommendation, citing security and stability for the chairman and the independent director. While Jay Shah will replace Barclay in December, the position of independent director is vacant since Indra Nooyi vacated the chair earlier this year.

Jay Shah ‘unanimously’ appointed as ICC Chairman

According to reports, Jay Shah enjoyed overwhelming support from the ICC board, with 16 out of 15 members backing his candidacy. This level of support suggested that his election to the ICC chairmanship may be a mere formality. The nomination process concluded on August 27, setting the stage for a potential changing of the guard in international cricket administration.

Shah’s rise to the ICC chairmanship goes to show his impressive work at the BCCI. Ever since becoming BCCI Secretary in 2019, he has been instrumental in implementing several key reforms and initiatives that have enhanced the financial stability and popularity of Indian cricket.
