Jay Shah’s replacement found? Devajit Saikia to be “acting” BCCI Secretary till September 2025

Jay Shah assumed the Chairmanship role for the ICC on December 1.

Jay Shah, who just took over as ICC President, has been replaced as interim secretary by Devajit Saikia in a major administrative change inside the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Roger Binny, the president of the BCCI, made the nomination and used his constitutional authority to facilitate the change.

Who is Jay Shah’s “makeshift” replacement?

Saikia, a native of Assam and a former first-class cricketer, currently serves as the BCCI joint secretary. His appointment comes as a temporary measure, with Binny invoking clause 7(1) (d) of the BCCI constitution to delegate secretarial powers to the Assam official, who is also the state’s Advocate General. The rule reads, ““The president shall in the event of vacancy or indisposition shall delegate the functions to another office bearer until the vacancy is duly filled up or indisposition ceases.”

In a detailed letter addressed to Saikia, Binny explained the rationale behind the appointment. “Accordingly, I delegate the functions of secretary to you till the post is filled up by processes laid down as per BCCI rules and regulations. I am confident you will perform the duties to the best of your abilities and with aplomb,” Binny wrote to Saikia.

The arrangement is expected to be a stop-gap measure, with Saikia set to continue in this role until September 2025.
