Jasprit Bumrah’s recovery from stress fracture has been a slow one and the Indian team management is unlikely to risk playing him in the three ODIs against Australia just after the end of the four-match Test series. Bumrah will be needed for the potential World Test Championship final at the Oval in London from June 7-11 and also for the big ODI World Cup in India at the end of the year.

Therefore, there is a possibility that Bumrah will return to play during Mumbai Indians’ campaign at the IPL this year where his workload will be monitored.

The sight of Jasprit Bumrah going full tilt at Steve Smith and Co will have to wait with the BCCI set to rule Jasprit Bumrah out of the Border Gavaskar Trophy. Bumrah is not part of the squad for the 1st two Tests but was considering returning in Dharamshala. However, given the World Cup later this year, the Indian cricket board has decided against bringing him back to red ball cricket just yet.

As per The Telegraph, Bumrah will not join the squad for the final two matches of the series. India’s pace spearhead is currently at the NCA as he rehabilitates from injury. The 28-year-old has been out of action for the last 6 months due to a persistent back injury. He was named in the squad for the SriLanka ODIs but pulled out citing stiffness.

Now at the NCA, Bumrah has fully recovered. He is reportedly bowling full tilt and working on his skills with the white ball. A rest from the Border Gavaskar Trophy gives him more time for rehabilitation. There is a greater emphasis on spin during the Test series and India already have Siraj, Shami, Umesh and Unadkat to cover.

Bumrah’s return to the set-up is not straightforward. The lanky quick will undergo a fitness test next week to determine his levels. Fortunately, the pacer has not complained of any stiffness, hinting at him getting closer to 100%.

Should he be passed fit, Bumrah could return to the ODIs. The 50-over leg of the tour begins on March 17 at Wankhede in Mumbai. Following the IND vs AUS ODIs, Bumrah is expected to feature for the Mumbai Indians in the IPL 2023.

The BCCI are yet to announce the squads for the 3rd and 4th Tests of the Border Gavaskar Trophy. Chairman of Selectors Chetan Sharma is expected to reveal the same alongside the ODI squad in the coming weeks.
