Jasprit Bumrah ‘dropped’ as vice-captain for IND vs BAN Test series

Jasprit Bumrah was the vice-captain in Test for the England Test series. However, BCCI has not named Rohit Sharma's deputy for Bangladesh Test series.

Who will be Rohit Sharma’s deputy in the IND vs BAN Test series? So far, even though, the India squad for Bangladesh Test series has been announced, there is no clarity on the role. Jasprit Bumrah, who was the vice-captain in the IND vs ENG Test series, is back but not as the deputy. In fact, the BCCI has not named any vice-captain for the series at all.

With Rohit Sharma nearing the end of his tenure as the Indian captain, the BCCI has been devising a succession plan. Shubman Gill was officially named the vice-captain in two white-ball formats. But in Tests, there has been no clarity with multiple big names in the line. However, despite being not named the vice-captain officially, Jasprit Bumrah is likely to assist Rohit on the field.

Who is India’s vice-captain in Tests?

The fact that there will be several players taking decisions on the field to assist Rohit Sharma, there is no clear favourite. And that is the reason why BCCI and the selectors have not taken a call on the vice-captain.

Rishabh Pant will be crucial as the wicketkeeper to assist Rohit Sharma on the DRS calls. Similarly, Jasprit Bumrah is the leader of the pace attack. He will assist Rohit in taking the calls on bowling changes. Virat Kohli is the squad’s most senior player and will have a say too, especially as the former Test captain, whom Rohit trusts immensely. There is KL Rahul too. He has been impressive with accurate calls on DRS and Rohit values his opinion.

To make things interesting, Jasprit Bumrah may not even be on the field the whole time. As a fast bowler, he needs workload management, which hinders his captaincy aspirations.

Who will be India’s next Test captain?

Again, there is no clear favourite and the BCCI has not officially discussed the topic. Rohit Sharma is expected to continue until 2027 World Test Championship cycle. But there is no clarity on whether he would. 2027 will be crucial as India will fight for the ODI World Cup and could compete for the WTC Final once again.

The ODI World Cup is likely to be Rohit’s last assignment as India captain. Till then, BCCI is expected to remain silent on the matter.

Rishabh Pant was the frontrunner to succeed Rohit but his near-fatal car crash derailed his progress. Now, Shubman Gill is touted to be the next big thing in Indian cricket. He is already an all-format player. And the BCCI could look at him as the natural successor.

Jasprit Bumrah, with all the workload management needed for him, is unlikely to be the India captain in Tests. Hence, it’s still an open race between Shubman and Rishabh.
