Jason Gillespie has finally broken his silence on why he stepped down as Pakistan’s Test coach. His revelations paint a grim picture of internal politics within the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), showing why Pakistan has become one of the toughest cricket teams to coach. Despite their reputations, neither Gillespie nor Gary Kirsten could survive the turmoil for a year.
Kirsten quit as white-ball coach before coaching a single ODI match, and Gillespie followed soon after, frustrated by the ‘toxic’ environment. The reasons behind their exits shed light on PCB’s dysfunctional management and “lack of transparency.”

One of Gillespie’s primary frustrations was being removed from the selection process. Once sidelined, his responsibilities as head coach were significantly diminished, relegating him to little more than a match-day observer. Reflecting on the situation, Gillespie said on ABC Grandstand:
“In essence, I was basically hitting catches and that was about it on the morning of a game. You want to be able to have clear communication with all stakeholders, including selectors, and at least know what the team is before the game. That just made things a lot more difficult to do my job effectively.”

Gillespie, who was signed back in April this year for a two-year tenure with the red ball team, had been increasingly frustrated with the PCB’s management. His discontent stems from being kept out of the loop during key decisions in recent home series against England, with the Nielsen contract situation seemingly serving as the final trigger for his resignation. The decision to terminate Neilsen was made abruptly, with zero communication from the board.
“My senior assistant coach Tim Nielsen was told his services were no longer required, and I had zero communication from anyone about that. After several other things that had gone on in the previous months, that was the moment I thought, ‘Well, I’m not really sure they actually want me to do this job,’” Gillespie explained. This lack of transparency and blatant disregard for communication left Gillespie questioning his position and authority as head coach
