Jake Fraser-McGurk, Steve Smith snubbed by Australia for ICC T20 World Cup

Jake Fraser-McGurk, Steve Smith fail to make Australia squad for ICC T20 World Cup, David Warner finds place as Mitchell Marsh captains side

Despite heroics in IPL 2024, young destructive batter Jake Fraser-McGurk has been snubbed by Australia. The 22-year-old top order batter will not be traveling to USA and the Caribbeans with the Men in Yellow. Veteran batter Steve Smith too has been snubbed as David Warner finds his place in the 15-member squad.

No place for Jake Fraser-McGurk

259 runs from 6 innings in IPL 2024 for Delhi Capitals was not enough for Jake Fraser-McGurk to get his chance in the Australia Squad for ICC T20 World Cup. Instead the selectors decided to go for all-rounder Cameron Green who according to his standards is having a sub par season in IPL.

Australia has their top order settled with the likes of skipper Mitchell Marsh, David Warner and Travis Head. As a result, the young batter had to face the snub. Selection chief George Bailey claimed that McGruk despite “continues to impress and is developing rapidly” will have to sit out.

“We will continue monitoring several players who have missed out on this preliminary squad and note that if we wish to change this squad, we have the option to do so over the coming weeks in accordance with ICC regulations,” he added.

Out of favour Steve Smith snubbed!

Veteran and ace top order batter Steve Smith too has been snubbed from the team. In the past decade, Smith hasn’t missed out on a World Cup call. With 3 World Cups to his name (2015, 2023 ODI WC) and 2021 T20 WC, Steve Smith will have to sit out for this tournament.

Over the years, Smith has fallen out of favour in the shortest format of the game.

Australia’s T20 World Cup squad: Mitch Marsh (c), Ashton Agar, Pat Cummins, Tim David, Nathan Ellis, Cameron Green, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Starc, Marcus Stoinis, Matthew Wade, David Warner, Adam Zampa.
