Former Indian cricketer Wasim Jaffer reckoned that Yashasvi Jaiswal shouldn’t be eyeing to play Ranji Trophy and should instead focus on playing all three formats for India. His remarks come after the southpaw’s shock departure from Mumbai to Goa. While various reports suggested that a tiff with captain Rahane and the team management was the reason behind his move to Goa, Jaffer had another perspective to offer.
Jaffer doesn’t want Jaiswal playing Ranji Trophy
Speaking to ESPNCricinfo, Jaffer reckoned that Jaiswal shouldn’t have left Mumbai no matter what Goa was offering. He opined that the southpaw was too young to move from one team to another.
“He shouldn’t be looking to play Ranji Trophy,” Jaffer said. “For somebody like him, he should be playing for India in all three formats. That should be his focus,” Jaffer said.
Jaiswal managed to finally rediscover his touch in RR’s game against PBKS on Saturday. Prior to his 67-run knock, which also happened to be his slowest 50 in IPL, he had registered scores of 1, 29 and 4.
Jaffer opined that his move from Mumbai to Goa could be playing on his head, indirectly affecting his form in the IPL.
“I’m sure it [the move] is playing on his mind. Because that has been happening in this week or two. But yes, runs from him is very, very vital for Rajasthan Royals. He’s looking a little bit off-colour; trying too hard, trying too hard, too early,” he added.
Jaiswal’s new stint in Goa
Jaiswal will lead Goa in the upcoming domestic season. As MCA can’t match that offer with senior pros like Ajinkya Rahane, Shreyas Iyer and Suryakumar Yadav present, he was granted the NOC immediately.
“I have had the privilege of representing Mumbai in domestic cricket and have immensely benefited from the opportunities provided by the association. However, after careful consideration of my career aspirations and personal circumstances, I have decided to seek a transfer to Goa to continue my domestic cricket journey,” Yashasvi Jaiswal wrote in his email to the MCA.
