Australia is gearing up to host India in the five-match Test series, known as the Broder-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT), later this year. With a decade-long drought in the BGT, Australia is focused on securing a victory. Australia last claimed the BGT in the 2014/15 series, defeating India 2-0 at home. Since then, they have suffered four consecutive series losses to India, including two historic defeats on their home soil.
Hazlewood aims to break India’s winning streak
Fast bowler Josh Hazlewood, one of the few remaining players from the 2014/15 Australian side, highlighted the importance of winning this series. “There are quite a few players who have never beaten India in a Test series. It’s quite astounding to say that,” Hazlewood told ESPNcricinfo. “We need to tick that off, especially at home, where we should win every series.”
India’s historic series wins in Australia
India’s first series win in Australia during the 2018-19 season marked the first time any Asian team defeated Australia in a Test series. The 2020/21 series was even more special. After being bowled out for just 36 in the first Test in Adelaide, India, led by stand-in captains and missing key players due to injuries, bounced back with victories at the MCG and the Gabba, and a draw in Sydney, to win the series 2-1.
Australia’s challenge at home
Although Australia has come close to challenging India’s dominance at home, they have never posed a significant threat to India’s chances of winning the series 2-1 in the past decade.
